Brooks Sullivan, a 33-year-old casual NBA fan from Benton City, Missouri, is pretty sure he's heard of the guys that will be participating in the slam dunk contest. He's not one hundred percent sure, but he's almost positive.
"I can't believe Alvin Robertson is in the slam dunk contest. I thought he retired a long time ago," said Sullivan, referring to the retired guard who spent time with the Spurs, Bucks, Pistons and Raptors before his career ended in 1996. "What's that? His name is Nate Robinson? The little guy? Oh. I thought that was Spud Webb."
Sullivan then wondered if he had confused other dunk contest participants with former NBA players, television personalities, or guys he went to college with.
"So Gerald Wallace isn't that old guy from 60 Minutes? And Terrence Williams isn't the 34-year-old software engineer who lived across the hall from me freshman year? Yeah, I guess that makes sense. Oh, well. Maybe LeBron James or Dwight Howard will be in the front row involved in some good natured hijinks. That always makes for an entertaining NBA All-Star Weekend."
