Despite offering Bobby Bowden two options regarding his future, neither of which involved returning as head coach of the Seminoles, Florida State graciously allowed Bowden, in what was his last game as head coach, to stand on the sideline for the Gator Bowl, wearing official team gear and everything.
"We wanted to honor Bobby in his final game," said Florida State's new head coach Jimbo Fisher. "Several ideas were tossed around, including letting him come to team meetings and contribute to game planning, but we settled on allowing him to stand with the team during the entire game. It seemed most fitting for a guy that's been a head coach here for the past thirty-three years."
Florida State athletic director Randy Spetman thought it would only be appropriate to send Bowden out with some type of commemorative gesture.
"It was the least we could do," said Spetman. "He's contributed so much to this university and helped bring our football program to national prominence. After forcing him to retire, we probably owed him much, much more. Allowing him to stand on the sideline wearing official team gear really was the least we could do. We should have given him a headset or something too."
