After firing Mike Leach for endangering the safety of one of his athletes when he had him locked in a storage closet, Texas Tech University took things a step further and immediately destroyed all closets, storage areas and crawl spaces on campus. The school was hoping to achieve a safer environment for all of its students. However, after realizing the shortsightedness of their actions, the school quickly regretted its decision.
"Yeah, we kind of blew that one," said Texas Tech chancellor Kent Hance. "Apparently closets, storage facilities and crawl spaces serve a purpose. It was Mr. Leach that was the issue, not the existence of those particular areas. Looking back, I'd say it was a mistake to rip up half of the buildings on our campus."
In addition to tearing out all closets, storage areas and crawl spaces, several electrical and mechanical rooms were destroyed, leaving the entire campus without power or water.
"We wanted to create a safer environment for our students, but actually we made things worse," said Hance. "It was one thing to worry about the slight risk of having them get locked in a closet, now they have to avoid a giant, unstable pile of rubble while navigating dark, unlit hallways everywhere they go. It's really quite dangerous."
