In his Broncos preseason debut, QB Kyle Orton didn't do so well, throwing 3 INTs in a 17-16 loss to the San Francisco 49ers. (Bronco Talk) -- (Mile High Report)
The poor performance, according to Orton, had nothing to do with playing for a new team in a new system, or even that he may not be a very good QB. He thinks he "didn't have it" because he shaved his neck beard.
"I grew the beard because it is incredibly cold playing QB in Chicago," said Orton. "I didn't realize that my beard, more specifically my neck beard, determines how well I play. By the regular season opener, I should have some pretty good growth, so Broncos fans need not to worry."

Michael Vick was bound to join a team sooner or later. I mean he was rumored to be close to signing with every football franchise in North America. Last night Michael Vick finally signed with the Philadelphia Eagles: (Inside the Iggles) -- (Bleeding Green Nation) -- (Ed the Sports Fan)
Philly fans are not very happy. Not because of Michael Vick's past, but because the brand new Madden 10 rosters are already outdated.
"This stinks!" says Tommy Herdman, a lifelong Eagles fan. "I waited in line for 6 hours to buy this game, and it's not even current."
P.J. Morris is also upset. "My favorite part of the game is that it actually has real NFL rosters, and now Madden 10 is already outdated. I don't even want to play it anymore. I guess myself and fellow Eagles fans will have to get our enjoyment from beating dudes up in the parking lot after games. Oh well."

With Jim Mora, Jr. replacing Mike Holmgren, most figured that the Seattle Seahawks would tweak their offense somewhat. According to 12th Man Rising, a Seahawks blog, we should expect the unexpected.
"What could be more unexpected than a double reverse on every play?" said Mora. "No one would expect an NFL team to run nothing but double reverses. We will catch each of our opponents completely off guard this season."
Quarterback Matt Hasselbeck disagrees with his coach.
"Double reverses are very unexpected, but not when you run them on every play. NFL defensive coordinators can figure out stuff like that. I guess publishing this in a blog isn't helping either."
Sorry, Matt.

The Cleveland Browns have a highly publicized quarterback battle this preseason between Derek Anderson and Brady Quinn. There have even been cheating allegations during intrasquad scrimmages. To settle things once and for all, coach Eric Mangini has decided to use the QB with the higher rating on Madden 10, to be released tomorrow.
"I'm sick of this crap," said Mangini. "This cheating nonsense, all the questions. I'm just sick of it. The Madden folks have done this for a while, so why not name a starter based on their rating? I know I could have used the internet to find the ratings sooner, but I like to play the game myself first."
Mangini would not comment on which rating he would use, but one would assume overall. For Derek Anderson's sake, he better hope it's the overall rating and not the dreamy good looks rating. If that's the case, he'll be holding a clipboard for sure.

The Dallas Cowboys are tired with the little amount of publicity their "huddle most of the time" offense is getting this preseason. People are talking about the Buffalo Bills "no-huddle" offense. According to Fanhouse, the Bills may not huddle all year. So why no love for the Cowboys?
"What's the deal? Our offense will huddle 80% of the time, but we can still be exciting," says QB Tony Romo. "So what if 'huddle most of the time' isn't as catchy as 'no-huddle'. Hype up our offense too! C'mon! I broke up with Jessica Simpson for this?"

The Michael Crabtree holdout has been among the top NFL headlines recently. Most reports indicate that he wants more money than Darrius Heyward-Bey, the top pick of the Raiders. But a source from inside Crabtree's camp indicates that he is not holding out for money. He's holding out for a better quarterback.
"I mean who is going to throw him the ball, J.T. O'Alex Shaunsmith?" questioned the source. Making reference to the last three 49ers quarterbacks. "Besides, Michael has a degree from Texas Tech University, and he can fall back on that if he chooses to sit out this season. What's that....he didn't graduate? Does San Francisco know that?"

A disturbing trend is making its way across NFL training camps this pre-season. The so-called "high character" players are being cut to make room for players that have talent.
"I really hate to cut these guys, but we've got to win football games," said a member of the Bills coaching staff. "They're nice people, but we're not trying to win a congeniality contest. I can't keep a WR on my roster just because he's a good guy when he runs a 5.1 40."
Buffalo is not the only club that feels this way.
Says a member of the Houston front office, "Sometimes coaching staffs need to make tough decisions, we just need to support them. I don't care what our character is as long as we make the playoffs."

Sources out of New York say that the Giants have mistakenly rewarded Eli Manning with a 6 year extension worth nearly $100 million. Some believe that this was just an elaborate prank played on the Giants by Eli and Peyton Manning.
"We are excited to have one of the greatest QBs of all-time on our roster," said a Giants spokesperson. "We are sad to let Eli go, I mean we did win a Super Bowl with him, but his brother is clearly a superior quarterback. I mean who in their right mind would make his brother Eli the highest paid player in the NFL? Seriously. What? Whose name is on the contract? Oh, crap."

With Michael Vick being released from prison, tons of football analysts have been speculating on the team he will sign with. From that speculation, all we know is this: Michael Vick might sign with any NFL team, the UFL, the Canadian League, Arena Football 2, and somehow the USFL.
"We're not sure what he'll do," said a member of Vick's camp, "but with interest from like 60 teams, it's tough to narrow it down."
Vick has been working out hard, and his return to professional football will surely be the greatest spectacle in North American sporting history.

More bad news out of the Motor City on the heels of Buick dropping its PGA Sponsorships. The city of Detroit has decided to drop its association with the Lions.
"It's disappointing," says Mark Owens, a fan of the team. "But I guess we can still root for them anyway, even if they aren't the DETROIT Lions anymore."
Early reports indicate that the Lions may now be co-sponsored by Mike's Collision Repair and Big Tony's Pizza.
