Jets quarterback Mark Sanchez sprained his knee while sliding in last night's victory over the Buffalo Bills in Toronto. Since the game was played in Canada with Canadian medical personnel on hand, the country's healthcare system was required to perform the standard, mandated amputation of Sanchez's leg, just above the knee.
"It's unfortunate that this game took place in Canada, and the most cost effective way to care for his knee was to cut his leg off," said Jets coach Rex Ryan, obviously frustrated. "If we had played this game in Buffalo, Mark could have probably just rehabbed with our athletic trainers, braced it up and been fine in a week or two. That's some awful luck."
Despite the obvious setback, Sanchez hopes to eventually be fitted for a prosthetic lower leg, and one day make a return to the NFL.
"It will be a long tough battle," said the quarterback, recovering in a Toronto hospital. "But with a lot of hard work in therapy, and of course some luck, hopefully I can play professional football again. If not, I have my good looks to fall back on, so whatever."
