At the request of several teams, the NFL Competition Committee is set to look into a possible link between winning the most games and qualifying for the playoffs. The committee is already investigating whether or not it is fair for teams to rest their starters late in the season, potentially effecting the outcome of games.
"Who knows, maybe there actually is a direct correlation between winning games and qualifying for the playoffs," said a competition committee spokesman. "Of course that would be unfair to losing teams and indicate poor competitive balance, so I doubt it."
Sources say the Browns, Bucs, Rams and Lions are among teams that contacted the league to look into these allegations.
"It could be nothing," said Lions quarterback Matthew Stafford, "but if you look at the teams that made the playoffs, they have better records than everyone else. It could be a total coincidence, but I'm glad the league is willing to investigate it."
Despite the thought that winning games has no effect on making the playoffs, the competition committee will look at this rumor closely.
"We take requests from all teams as seriously as possible, no matter how stupid they may seem."
If winning games is somehow determined to effect playoff qualification, the same organizations have asked the league to investigate what they feel is an unfair trend of always declaring the highest score the winner.
