After seeing Steven Colbert and the Colbert Nation sponsoring the U.S. Speed Skating team, Tom Richmond of Pensacola, Florida thought he'd like to get on board with the Winter Olympic publicity machine. Richmond, the owner, director and sole talent of his local cable access show The Richmond Rules, has decided to donate his old socks to the U.S. Hockey team.
"I don't have the financial capabilities of Steven Colbert," said Richmond, "so I have to work with what I got. And what I got is a bunch of old socks I don't wear anymore, and my wife would like me to get rid of them. Why not kill two birds with one stone? So I got rid of my socks and will hopefully generate some insane publicity with my sock donation to the Olympic hockey team."
Ron Wilson, the coach of the U.S. team, though appreciative, doesn't think the sock donation will help bring home a medal.
"It's nice that he is willing to donate to our team, but old, nasty socks? Really?" asked Wilson. "I don't think old socks with holes in them are really going to help our cause. Plus, I'm pretty sure there is some type of fungus growing on that bunch in the corner."
